About this role
SkyWest Charter Service is seeking a reliable and attentive Porter / Baggage & Cargo Attendant to assist with passenger baggage, cargo handling and cargo safety checks.
The successful applicant will help ensure baggage and cargo are correctly identified, safely handled and checked for prohibited, restricted or potentially dangerous items in accordance with company procedures and training.
Responsibilities
• Assist Customer with moving baggage and Cargo to and from designated areas
• Assist with weighing, tagging, recording and sorting baggage and cargo by flight and destination
• Ask customers to declare cargo contents and check packages and supporting information according to company procedures
• Check for signs of dangerous goods, prohibited items, undeclared contents, leaks, damage or unsafe packaging
• Pay particular attention to items such as batteries, fuels, gas cylinders, aerosols and chemicals, following the applicable acceptance procedures
• Immediately report suspected dangerous goods or other cargo concerns to the supervisor or authorized airline representative
• Hold questionable items from dispatch until cleared by authorized personnel
• Move and store baggage and cargo carefully to prevent loss or damage
• Assist authorized personnel with loading and unloading as directed
• Assist with returning baggage to passengers and verifying baggage tags
• Keep handling and storage areas clean, secure and organized
Requirements
• Basic reading, writing and numeracy skills
• Ability to read baggage tags, cargo descriptions, labels and safety instructions accurately
• Strong attention to detail and willingness to question unclear cargo declarations
• Ability to safely lift and move baggage and cargo, using equipment or team assistance when needed
• Must be honest, punctual, dependable and courteous
• Good communication and teamwork skills
• Willingness to complete required dangerous-goods awareness and cargo-handling training before independently performing assigned checks
• Willingness to work early mornings, weekends and public holidays when required
